Igor Tudor spoke to the media at Hotspur Way on Tuesday afternoon, ahead of our UEFA Champions League Round of 16, second leg against Atletico Madrid at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday night (8pm UK).
Here's what he had to say...
It was a very positive result against Liverpool on Sunday - is your target now to do all you can do to qualify tomorrow night or play well and get confidence ahead of such a big game on Sunday?
Igor: “I think both things. It's a game that we should play to pass. So, the main goal is to be focused on this game, even knowing that our first thing is to stay in the league. Tomorrow is, let's say, a big challenge after everything that happened to show that we can do good things against them, that they are no better than us. So, it's a Champions League game for the glory.”
Atletico Madrid have lost 3-0 against Barcelona and Real Vallecano in the last month – does that give you hope that you can do something tomorrow?
Igor: “Difficult, but not impossible. We need to stay in the game as much as possible. The game can be long, so focus on our strengths, our things, everything still to play. So, believe that we can do it. That's the important thing from the start.”
Can I ask about players we saw in training – Lucas, Destiny, Cristian, Joao - are they all going to be available to play tomorrow?
Igor “Joao, no, but Destiny and Lucas will be on the bench tomorrow. One part of the game, not too much because they just started training with us, but it's good to see them.”
What about Christian?
Igor: “Romero? Yeah. He's there. He can play. Joao, no. Joao is a little bit worse, so he'll be for the next game, but Romero is in.”
There was no Conor Gallagher out there (in training) – what’s the latest with him?
Igor: “We'll see today what we can do, because he has, as you know, probably asthma problems. He gets some virus, which is not a nice thing. We're going to see if he's able tomorrow to go on the bench, we hope. It's nothing like a danger, but still, he's not able to play.”
Do you feel after Sunday there's a weight lifted off your shoulders, getting a positive result?
Igor: “Of course. It's important, as you said, when you make one good performance like we did, it gives courage to everyone. To confirm the good will to start to change things. We start in the training, but we didn't see in the games because of circumstances that happened in the last games. It was a little bit frustrating because, as I said before, the players really care. We speak a lot about the moment, so when it's a moment so difficult, it's not easy to start to move things. This is, I believe, one good moment that happened in the last game. As I said before, we need to be, I like to say, honest with the things you can give in the pitch, and then the football will give you back. So, this happened, and I'm happy for the players, for everyone. Now we need to continue in that direction.”
Were you going to play a back three at Anfield before you lost Conor Gallagher?
Igor: “No, you know I don't speak about those things before the game, and even now, after the game, there's no reason to speak about these tactics I did before.”
Did you see enough on Sunday to be confident that Tottenham will stay in the Premier League, the fight and desire you had in the team and the last-minute goal?
Igor: “I'm very confident.”
