Tōko Koga has been named your HSBC Player of the Match after her impressive display in our 1-0 win over West Ham United on Sunday afternoon.
The Japan international has taken the majority of your votes to take the first award of the 2025/25 Barclays Women’s Super League campaign on what was her competitive debut for the Club.
Joining us from Feyenoord in the summer, the young defender lined up on her first start in the WSL alongside Clare Hunt in central defence and the duo delivered a solid performance to preserve a clean sheet on the opening weekend.
Adapting to a completely new league, our number 32 quickly brought calmness in our backline and showcased composure in possession from the very start, completing the most passes in the game (79) with an 88% pass accuracy in the London derby.
With Bethany England converting from the penalty spot with four minutes remaining on the clock to give us a narrow lead at Brisbane Road, the 19-year-old had to be alert in the closing stages – and she produced an excellent tackle on the edge of the box to ensure we claimed the three points in our season opener.
First winning the header from Anouk Denton’s cross from the right, Tōko then produced a perfectly-timed tackle to perfection on the edge of the box to deny Manuela Pavi and ease away any late pressure inside our box - winning 75% of her ground duels on the afternoon.
