World Cup Play-Offs
There are still places to be earned at the World Cup with play-offs set to be played across the globe in the Spring.
In Europe, 16 teams (12 runners-ups from the group stage of the UEFA qualification and four qualifiers from the UEFA Nations League) have been split into four qualification paths.
Each path will consist of two semi-finals, which will take place on Thursday March 26, 2026, with the winners from each semi-final facing off in four finals to ultimately produce the final four European nations at the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Destiny Udogie, and Guglielmo Vicario’s Italy have been drawn into Path A with Northern Ireland, Wales, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Should Italy win their semi-final against Northern Ireland, in which they are seeded as the home team, they will travel to the winner of Wales and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Ben Davies and Brennan Johnson could feature for Wales, who would host the Path A final should they win their semi-final at home against Bosnia and Herzegovina, and could host Jamie Donley if Northern Ireland defeat Italy.
Sweden (Lucas Bergvall and Dejan Kulusevski) have been drawn into Path B after qualifying through the UEFA Nations League. They will play an away semi-final against Ukraine, with the winner hosting the victorious nation from the Poland v Albania semi-final.
Radu Drăgușin’s Romania will play in Path C, travelling to Turkey for their semi-final, with the winner of that tie visiting the winner of the other semi-final in Path C, Slovakia v Kosovo.
All four path finals will be played on Tuesday March 31, 2026
The final two places in the 48-team World Cup will be decided at an inter-confederation play-off tournament in Mexico this coming March. Bolivia, DR Congo, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia and Suriname will contest the tournament, with DR Congo and Iraq being the two-seeded countries for the six-team tournament based on their world ranking.
