Rodrigo Bentancur has tasted success in a Spurs shirt and is hungry to achieve more after penning a new, long-term deal at the Club he holds close to his heart.
The 28-year-old entered his latest campaign in north London a champion having lifted the UEFA Europa League trophy following that 1-0 win over Manchester United to end our 17-year wait for silverware in May last term.
Since securing his move from Juventus in January 2022, the Uruguay international has notched 123 appearances in our colours to date and feels at home on and off the pitch with his expanding family loving their life in the capital.
"I feel really good and very happy to continue this history with this fantastic Club," said Rodrigo.
"Also, my family is so happy, so I want to enjoy the moment. I want to continue my history with this Club. I think it’s the best decision to continue. So I’m very happy. I love the Club and I feel really good. I have friends, fantastic people who work hard every day in this Club.
"And then it’s also a family project. We have my daughter, we love this country, my wife and I are awaiting our second baby next year. So we’re really happy and we want to enjoy this. After three and a half years, it is my home. So I’m very happy to continue my history in this country."
Arriving from Turin alongside Dejan Kulusevski, the tireless midfielder made an instant impact in the second half of the 2021/22 campaign, starting 16 of our final 18 matches as we secured a return to the UEFA Champions League.
Doubling his career goal tally in a matter of months at the start of the following season, Rodrigo’s first full season in N17 was devastatingly curtailed by an anterior cruciate ligament injury in January, 2023.
Returning nine months later for four games before an ankle injury ruled him out until the new year, he captained the side for the first time as we opened 2024 with a FA Cup third round win over Burnley. He then scored his first goal in over a year in our 2-2 draw at Manchester United in the Premier League the following week.
Winning 10 trophies across spells in Italy with Juventus and Argentina with Boca Juniors, our number 30 added to his personal trophy haul after being an integral part of our Europa League success last term, featuring in 13 of our 15 matches across the competition, including playing the full 90 minutes in the final in Bilbao and thoroughly enjoying the extended celebrations afterwards!
"I think coming back after my injury—my knee [in 2023]. I think after the Europa League that’s the most important moment," added the Uruguayan, who is currently capped 72 times for the South American nation.
"When you take an injury like this it’s hard, after eight or nine months out, you need to work hard. So I think this moment, after the Europa League, is the most important for me at this Club.
"After we won in Europe, it was fantastic. We worked hard every day for this, and now we want to continue. I’m very happy and, as I told you before, I want to enjoy this moment and enjoy more years at this Club.
"It’s fantastic when you win trophies, also after long years in this Club, don’t win another trophy. When you win something important, it’s huge for the players. I’m very happy and I want to continue to win trophies.
"We celebrated in the hotel with the team. But then, when I took my holidays, we celebrated with my whole family and my wife’s family. It was good, very good. When you win something, you can celebrate with your family too, and that’s very important."
With changes in leadership for the 2025/26 season, Thomas Frank is four months into his tenure as our Head Coach and close friend Cristian Romero was made Club captain following Heung-Min Son's departure in the summer.
Featuring in all but one fixture so far this term and starting the last six games on the spin, Rodrigo has been a mainstay at the heart of midfield and is eyeing more success as we fight across four fronts in the Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Champions League this term.
"We have a new manager, and the new captain is my friend, Cuti. He deserves this, to be captain in this Club. I enjoy this also," he added.
"My teammates and every person here is amazing. Every player. I enjoy every day in this Club because of them. My teammates are amazing. So I’m very happy.
"We want to win another trophy this season. This is the most important thing. I want to continue at this level, I think I feel every day getting better and better, so I want to continue in this. And I want to win more trophies for this Club."
