Robert Vilahamn felt it was a game ‘we should have won’ but failed to capitalise on our chances after we played out a 1-1 draw with Everton in our final game of the Barclays Women’s Super League.
We were dealt an early blow in the clash at Walton Hall Park when Veatriki Sarri’s free-kick found the back of the net but, on the half-hour mark, we grabbed a leveller as Drew Spence stroked home her third goal of the season.
A strong second half performance on Merseyside saw us carve out the best opportunity in the second period when a superb cutback from Bethany England found Jess Naz on the edge of the box, but our number seven was superbly denied by Courtney Brosnan, seeing the points shared in our WSL season finale.
The final result with the Toffees saw us finish 11th in the table, level on points with Leicester City after they defeated West Ham United to climb above us on goal difference.
“I think we started the game quite badly,” Robert said, speaking to SPURSPLAY after the game. ‘Everton were so much better in the beginning and scored but, from minute 25 or so, we were taking over the game and in the second half, we were very dominant.
“We had some good chances and we should have won this game if you look at the whole 90 minutes, but it’s another one of those games where we don’t really find a way to win.”
On failing to take our chances…
“We can summarise the season as it has ended and it’s quiet easy to see where we need to improve but, on the other hand, you also see how we stick to a plan, how we play and how we are dominant in games and phases of the game. But we need to get better, we need to get sharper as we want to win these games and be much higher up in the table.”
On the build-up to Drew Spence’s goal…
“It was top quality. We need to make sure we look into this and make sure we analyse it well because we need to improve and we need to be much better next season. We’re going to learn from this season, but right now, we close the season with a good performance, but we didn’t nail the win and we really wanted that, so I’m a little bit disappointed with that.”
On key learnings from this season…
“I mean, it’s a lot of stuff, on and off the pitch, leadership from me, the players, how we can take the next step, how we can be more clinical and how we can take the next steps, so it’s going to be a long summer where we will make sure we have great discussions on how we’re going to improve and, from that, we’re going to come back very strong next season.”
