Bethany England acknowledged the ‘disappointing’ campaign in the Barclays Women’s Super League, but our skipper was quick to point out the fantastic support throughout the season.
Our 2024/25 campaign in England’s top flight came to an end on Saturday after a 1-1 draw with Everton at Walton Hall Park, Drew Spence’s strike – her third goal of the season – cancelled out Veatriki Sarri’s early opener on Merseyside.
That result saw us end our sixth season in the WSL with an 11th-place finish in the table, level on points with Leicester City after they defeated West Ham United to climb above us on goal difference.
Our leading goalscorer this term, with eight goals in all competitions, couldn’t hide her disappointment on the second half of the campaign but was full of praise for our Lilywhite fanbase.
“Disappointing,” she told us. “There’s no sugarcoating this season, I think we have picked up one or two wins since Christmas. We had such a flying start in the first half of the season, I think it’s just disappointing and I know we have more, but we can’t change that now, we fought to the very end.
“If anything, I would like to say a huge thank you to the fans who have been continuously travelling, supporting us and chanting our names because, without them, we can’t be the best versions of ourselves so, for that, I’m very thankful and appreciative of the great following for this football Club.”
Bethany on her thoughts on the game…
“I thought we started slow, for the first 20 to 25 minutes, we were nowhere near our level. But then I thought we grew into the game well, we fought back and we got the equaliser, which was important, especially going in at half-time. We all know it has been a frustrating season for us as a whole. I think we can be creating and finishing more chances, but I don’t think either team deserved a win, it was fairly even, so I would say it was a fair result.”
Bethany on the character shown to come back…
"We had to show so much resilience this season and it’s just not on the pitch, but also off the pitch. There’s a lot of people fighting individual battles and, we do have to remember as humans, we do go through a lot, it has been a tough season. We try to bring the best version of ourselves on to the pitch and I think we managed to show that character and resilience in this game by not allowing ourselves to fall short and lose all three points.”
