Rodrigo Bentancur picked up an assist as Uruguay beat Venezuela 2-0 in the early hours of Wednesday to move within a point of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The assist was trademark Rodrigo, pressing high up and robbing Yangel Herrera of possession 35 yards out. Giogian de Arrascaeta picked up the loose ball, steadied himself and hit a rocket into the top corner to make it 2-0 two minutes into the second half in Montevideo. Earlier, Rodrigo Aguirre headed home from a corner just before half-time.
Rodrigo completed 79 minutes and Uruguay now need a draw from their final two qualifying matches against Peru and Chile in September to secure a place in CONMEBOL's top six qualifying and therefore a place in the finals in USA/Mexico and Canada next summer.
Richarlison did just that with Brazil, the striker off the bench in the second half as Vini Jr's goal was enough to beat Paraguay and secure their place in the 2026 showpiece. Meanwhile, Cuti Romero played a full shift as holders Argentina - who are 10 points clear and already qualified - drew 1-1 with Colombia.
