A busy week for our loanees continued on Wednesday night as Tyrese Hall’s Notts County notched up a big win over Shrewsbury Town in League Two.
The midfielder came on for the last 15 minutes to help his side see out a 4-1 home victory – their first of the campaign – having been an unused substitute in Saturday’s 2-1 reverse at Barrow.
The last few days have seen numerous milestone moments for our players out on loan, capped by first goals for their respective clubs for Alfie Devine, Alejo Veliz and Will Lankshear, while Mikey Moore grabbed an assist on his debut for Rangers – although the latter subsequently endured a challenging evening in UEFA Champions League qualifying on Tuesday, with Russell Martin’s men suffering a 3-1 home defeat to Club Brugge in the first leg of their play-off round tie.
It all started on Saturday when midfielder Devine fired in a superb goal from out wide on the right to set Preston North End on the way to a 2-1 home win over Leicester City in the Championship. Striker Veliz then got in on the act with his first goal since returning to Rosario Central on loan, heading home in the ninth minute as his side drew 1-1 at home to Deportivo Riestra in Argentina, with only a late equaliser denying them maximum points.

Attacking midfielder Moore made his much-anticipated debut for Rangers on Saturday, starting their Scottish League Cup second round tie at home to Alloa Athletic and taking just 13 minutes to make an impact, his pass setting Nedim Bajrami away to score a fine individual goal. The hosts went on to win 4-2 with Mikey completing 69 minutes before being substituted.
Sunday brought a first senior league goal for striker Lankshear, who volleyed in a ninth-minute equaliser for Oxford United in their trip to Hull City, although the afternoon ended in disappointment for the front man as his side lost 3-2 after a stoppage-time winner from Oli McBurnie. Also in Championship action at the weekend were Jamie Donley and Ashley Phillips, who were both introduced off the bench mid-way through the second half of Stoke City’s 3-0 win at Sheffield Wednesday. Yang Min-Hyeok was an unused substitute for Portsmouth in their 2-1 home defeat to Norwich City.
Two of our Academy products found themselves up against one another at the weekend as George Abbott’s Wycombe Wanderers drew 1-1 at home to Damola Ajayi’s Doncaster Rovers. Both players featured off the bench in the second half for their respective sides before going on to endure midweek defeats, midfielder George starting for Wycombe in their 1-0 home defeat to Exeter City and forward Damola again coming on as a substitute as Doncaster went down 2-0 at Huddersfield Town on Tuesday evening.
Moore again featured for Rangers on Tuesday night after coming on as a 70th-minute substitute, but the damage had already been done as his side trailed 3-1 to Club Brugge at Ibrox to leave their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League hanging by a thread. They’ll be determined to turn their play-off round tie around next Wednesday in Belgium.
The week’s action for our loanees concludes on Thursday night when Alfie Dorrington’s Aberdeen host FCSB in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League qualifier. Defender Alfie enjoyed a clean sheet at the weekend, playing 90 minutes in his side’s 3-0 victory at Greenock Morton in the second round of the Scottish League Cup.
