Mathys Tel: “We have to show who we are and go again"

Mon 14 April 2025, 14:00|Tottenham Hotspur

It’s two goals in two Premier League games for Mathys Tel, but the forward was in anything but celebratory mood after our 4-2 defeat against Wolves at Molineux on Sunday.

Lively throughout, Mathys struck on the hour from Brennan Johnson’s low cross to cut the deficit to 2-1. Typical of the afternoon, Wolves capitalised on a mistake to make it 3-1 five minutes later. We didn’t allow ourselves to completely haul the home side back, illustrated again later when Richarlison nodded home for 3-2 with five minutes left, only for Matheus Cunha to this time take advantage of a mistake just seconds later to secure Wolves’ 4-2 victory.

“It’s a difficult day,” said Mathys, with the home dressing room’s celebrations just metres away in the tunnel area. “We know that, but we can’t give up. We have to learn from this situation. We have to show who we are and go again. We have a big game on Thursday, and we have to be ready, go ahead and don’t give up.”

It was put to Mathys that every time we gave ourselves hope, we were the masters of our own downfall immediately afterwards, at 2-1 and 3-2. “It’s about concentration,” he added, speaking on our Review Show. “We have to concentrate from the first minute until the last minute.”

As for his own form, he added: “I’m very happy to score my second goal in the Premier League, but I’m a person who just looks (out) for my team, always my team. Yes, I scored a goal, but we lost, so I’m not happy. I thought we showed some good things, but we made a lot of mistakes and that’s why we lost.”
